Conclusion of the Conference

"Saving Traditional Wooden Boats through digital imaging, development of an integrated navigation platform and AR /VR applications"



With success and great participation of the academic community, on Friday, March 10, 2023, in Karditsa, in the auditorium of the Faculty of Forestry, Wood Science and Design of the University of Thessaly, the scientific, hybrid conference - live and remote - was concluded on the topic:


"Saving traditional wooden boats through digital imaging, development of an integrated navigation platform and AR /VR applications"


The conference was organized by the partners of the SaveWoodenBoats project to inform the academic community about the importance of the project and the progress of the project’s work.

The President of the Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences and Design, Mr. Ioannis Papadopoulos, opened the conference and at the same time welcomed the participants and attendees.

The conference started with a presentation by Mrs. Konstantina Adamopoulou, Director of the State Historical Archives - Hydra Museum, on the topic: " The perama ELENI P. A turbulent journey with a safe final destination". It covered a review of the history of the traditional ship from its construction in Skiathos to its lifting in Salamina, a reference to the time of its declaration as a historical monument and the time-consuming and desperate efforts of the Museum for its rescue and restoration.

On behalf of the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, a presentation was given afterwards, on the following topic: "The cultural value of wooden shipbuilding and wooden boats", highlighting the urgency of the project in the context of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of our country and the value of the project.

The baton was passed to the other project partners, who presented innovative research focused on topics related to traditional wooden shipbuilding, such as wooden shipbuilding techniques, but also on conservation issues, such as documenting the preservation state of ELENI P., its disassembly before restoration, and presenting the innovative methods used by the project to promote and highlight its cultural value.

The conference closed with a speech by Mr. Ioannis Parisis, president of the Museum of Maritime and Cultural Tradition of Skiathos, on the topic: "Shipbuilders and shipwrights of Skiathos, 1830-1930".
